The only reason he couldn’t get work during the era of this strip would be that he’s too young to handle the job. Afterall, the rake is bigger than he is. I used to go around doing yard work, mowing and raking, but I was in my teens. When I was Charlie’s age, I’d get money from my mom cleaning out a closet or storage room. That job was my size.
Around Christmas the citrus orchards around me would finish with the final pick. I would go to the farmer and ask if I could pick some left on the trees to sell for Christmas money. They would always agree and I would pick fruit, package in brown paper grocery bags and sell door to door for $1 a bag. Doesn’t sound much but it was 60 years ago and I made enough.

Or put a bow on the rake handle and give it to her. She could use it to get rid of that rats’ nest above her forehead.

Christmas is way too commercial, anyways. It gets very dangerous.

By the looks of that rake, you won’t be getting much Sally

Or give her the rake so that she can play “chores”.

Dad – I sold your rake to buy Sally a present. Are you OK with that?
