I read in one article that he’d been clean for a few years and the call to 911 was initially about a heart attack. So young to have a heart attack, but they seem to be common these days.
I lost a step-uncle to alcohol. It was a slow process. He just wouldn’t stop drinking no matter what ANYONE said and drank himself to death. Widowed his wife and left his two boys without a father. His boys were young. That was years ago. They are all messed up now. I’m not related to them anymore, but I was at the time.
My father, a WW2 veteran, did the same thing essentially as TStyle’s step uncle. He worked every day, and keep everything humming at home, while trying to burn the faces of the people he… you know.. out of his memory. There were times, when, as Dicken’s said, he was fully into his cups, the truth of some of the things he said he did explained a lot. And being his “therapist” by listening to these stories, while not easy for a teenager, gave me a small understanding of why he was the way he was. He died of liver failure at 57.
Thank you for the tribute Scott! Sorry to hear about your brother, alcohol should be labeled as hazardous as tobacco and other drugs imo. We’ll miss Matthew, R.I.P.
Thank you Scott, for the personal tie in. As people lose those that they are close to every day, I often feel detached from celebrity deaths. You really brought home a true personal connection here. ♥
We are all wonderfully and beautifully made by our creator! Our responsibility is to see that beauty in all people whatever their circumstances and troubles. Matthew Perry and your brother added so much to this world as we are all created to do in our own special way. Prayers for all affected by this terrible tragedy and this terrible affliction. May we find peace and joy in our lives by helping others.
He wasn’t an alcoholic, but another comic fave, Richard ‘Bull’ Moll passed away also. Not as young, he was 80, but it always hurts to lose a TV favorite.
I don’t drink and here is why. . . A drunk driver nearly killed me when I was 16 and I have lived with daily pain for over 60 years. When I was 20 a drunk drive killed my best friend and we buried him on their 1st anniversary. Three time since then I have had the spouses of good a friend and employees killed by drunk drives.
I read a quote from Mr. Perry that said he hoped he would be remembered first for the ways he tried to help fellow addicts struggling with life and for his acting accomplishments as secondary. Thank you for honoring his wishes with this moving tribute. ♥
And thank you for sharing your brother’s story. I’m sorry for your loss. ♥
Thank you for the tribute to Matthew and for sharing about your brother. With all due respect to Matthew (and Chandler), I just have to say it; can we be any more heartbroken?
Hugs, Scott. I’m sorry for the loss of your brother; it’s such a hard blow. I have a feeling that in Matthew’s case, an undiagnosed medical problem will be found as his cause of death, probably due to damage to his body from his addiction. My father was an alcoholic, though he died from lung cancer, as he was also a smoker. His health was already poor due to the alcoholism, and he didn’t survive long after the cancer diagnosis. He was a WWII vet, and his generation was not allowed weakness, or even much range of feeling. Like so many others, he self-medicated. <3
Firstly, I am so sorry for your loss. Having someone close to you die from alcoholism and depression is very hard. My father died from the same thing at only 49. Secondly, Matthew Perry was a fantastic talent that managed to hide most of his problems. It is such a loss for all of us. R.I.P.
Thanks to everybody who’s shared their own stories. I think Matthew Perry would have liked that. Addiction has such a stigma attached, but attaching a stigma can make a problem grow worse if it becomes hidden because of shame.
Take care of your body, it’s the only one you get. If you abuse it when you are young, that damage can really come back to haunt you. It’s worth noting that he had much more than a drinking problem.
With all the problems in the world, one mans addiction seems retaliative small. When you stop to consider the number of individuals affected by their problem it gets a little larger. Now consider the number of people who suffer with addiction around the world, the number of people who are affected would be impossible to calculate. Their parents, their siblings, their spouses, their children, their friends, their co-workers and the innocent people and their family and friends that also suffer when they are unwilling pulled in by a tragic accident. I wish there was a magic wand, it doesn’t exist. Every mans addiction is his own. With help and understanding there is hope.
You and your brothers know that Jeff’s body was weakened by his years of alcohol abuse. Matthew’s body may have also been weakened as a result of drugs and alcohol. A terrible way to go.
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. I’m saddened by the loss of Matthew Perry. Addiction is an evil thing. My brother-in-law thought he had conquered the evil beast. He was at least 30 years clean. But the evil beast had ruined his body. The evil beast had left irreparable damage. He died at 50 years old from his third heart bypass. The evil beast won in the end.
My condolences on the loss of your brother and thanks for sharing. My late godmother lost her only son to alcohol and then had to deal with the loss of her only granddaughter to the same affliction. One of the main reasons I only drink socially, that is, if I drink at all.
