Had a lady at our church ask our visiting Deacon in training that question. She gave the lady a questioning look and replied “I’m not”, then gave the lady a look with moving daggers in it. The lady apologized and turn as red as Santa Claus’s coat and pants.
I guess the equivalent question for men is, “do you drink a lot of beer or just overeat?” I can’t imagine anyone thinking that is a proper question to ask so why do people think it is OK to ask a woman if they are pregnant? If a woman is, AND if you are a friend, she will tell you when SHE is ready. If a woman isn’t, then you have just informed her that she looks fat. It also tells her that people are talking about her behind her back.
Pregnancy is not always a happy time. In addition to not feeling well [morning sickness, lack of sleep, etc.], a woman also has a lot of worries that she may not want to talk about. Especially with someone who is rude enough to ask the question.
Some good college friends were very excited about being pregnant. With twins. We visited them when she was 6 1/2 months along. They told us all about their dreams and plans, showed us the nursery, discussed potential names. They were both so excited and happy. A week after returning home, we got a call — the babies had died [umbilical cord issues]. She was 7 months along and had to carry them full term [mostly to ensure she would be able to have other children, but partly because of insurance (insurance didn’t cover premature births) and partly to avoid any legal hassles of ‘abortion’]. They did have more children and now have some grandchildren as well. But I still think of their immense sorrow whenever I hear someone say, “I wonder if she’s pregnant.”
I ran into an old girlfriend at a fair. I had not seen her in 20 years. She had her husband with her. I was at the fair with my wife and my stepdaughter, who was very pregnant. At the end of our brief conversation (still thinking in my mind that she was 22 years old), I indicated her stomach bulge and asked when she was expecting. Awkward does not begin to describe it.

When he said “When’s your due date?”, he was talking about your next credit card payment.

It is especially thoughtless to ask this question in today’s USA — at least in some states.
