Need to define definition between discovery and invention. We didn’t invent fire, we discovered how to harness it. Good chance I’ll go with language, which makes it easy to intercommunicate.
From Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner’ 2000 Year Old Man routine (just slightly edited);
BROOKS:“The best thing mankind ever devised, I think, in my humble opinion, is Saran Wrap. You can put a sandwich in it. You can look through it. You can touch it. You can put it over your face and you can fool around and everything. It’s so good and cute. You can wrap it up. I love it. You can put three olives in it and make a little one. You can put 10 sandwiches in it and make a big Saran Wrap. Whatever you want. It clings and sticks. It’s great. You can look right through it.
REINER: “But what about the wheel? What about fire?”
I learned decades ago to skip the snooze alarm. It’s ten lousy minutes, and you’re just drifting back off when it goes off again. My first job included open to close on Saturday and Sunday. 6 AM to Midnight. My alarm clock has two alarms, and I set the first for like 3:15, so I could go bac to sleep for two more hours. Now THAT’S a snooze alarm! (I STILL have that alarm clock, bought as a present from my wife (then girlfriend) in 1984!)

I like the old answer to that: The thermos. It keeps hot things hot and cold thing cold. How does it know?

I was going to say soap, but without controlled fire, it’s hard to make it, so maybe I’ll agree with Irwin — the ability to make controlled fire.

Ammonia and refrigeration. Without it and the concept.. civilization would not be what it is.

I’ve never used one of those snooze alarms. I consider them a torture device.
