One of my jobs growing up was to mow the lawn. Dad had this rinky-dink little electric mower with a coffee-grinder motor that would jam up if you had more than two blades of grass, and then I had to wait 20 minutes before I could reset the breaker. We also had a big yard with many trees, so don’t even get me started about extension cords. I used to tell him all the time to get rid of that lousy toy mower of his and get a gas one. He kept saying that the gas mowers “weren’t reliable”.
Of course you know what he did the moment I moved away from home.
I used to mow with the old reel mower we had. If the grass got very tall, it was a struggle to push it, even though the height was adjustable. I was glad when we got a gas mower.
I volunteer at a Repair Cafe every few months sharpening stuff. Sometimes someone will bring in a reel mower and ask if we can sharpen its blades. We don’t cuz we’re usually too busy and it looks really difficult to do. If it’s not too busy one of these times, I may try it.
When I bought a Scots silent reel to reel mower is was so easy to push. My young sons loved to use it. The handle could lower to my son’s height making it easier to push that the old mowers of the 40s.

In this case, probably for the best, that mower is bigger than Charlie Brown.

Power mowers were still a luxury then.

CB’s dad is a barber and that’s okay, he clips lawns all night and hair all day – kind of Monty Python

I used to work for a lady who had a gas powered reel mover. When her chestnut tree would drop the chestnuts it was a scary thing to use.
