“A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?”

One time I had my Commodore PET play my VIC 20, the PET won. I typed each move between the computers.

I can still remember when an average club player could beat a chess computer almost all of the time. Most of them back then were machines that only played chess, not programs that you ran on a home PC. That didn’t last. But with any chess program, you can still dumb them down if you want to have a chance.

Granted, with this human, that would take a lot of dumbing. Better if he can find humans at around his skill level. And on the Internet chess servers, there’s always someone.

That’s how “Machine Learning” just recently greatly increased the strength of Chess Engines. The basic rules of Chess, along with some algorithms are programmed in and the machine runs the Program to play millions of games against itself, eventually determining the best strategies to use in each situation it encounters. Even all of our Super Elite Grandmasters are now no match for Computers…

It would feel less impersonal to lose to a good-looking robot

It’s like removing a Band-Aid. One quick rip to get it over with only one sharp pain rather than prolong the pain.

Once, when my aunt and I were attempting to play Scrabble on her PC, the players somehow ended up both set to “computer.” It was the fastest game I’ve ever seen… and the computers beat our highest scores in a disgusting fashion.
