Whenever my Mum asked me and Dad what we’d have for dinner, Dad would reply, “Owt that I’m given and I’ll be glad of it.” That was no help at all. Mum would ask us that question each dinner time and Dad would give her the same unhelpful answer unless I answered Mum before him.
Mom’s father was very strict and he told the kids that if they didn’t eat what was put in front of them for dinner they would get the same thing for the next meal, and on and on until they ate it or it spoiled. Well, my Mom didn’t like that approach so with my sister and me she told us to at least taste it to see if we liked it and if we didn’t she didn’t force us to eat, but she wouldn’t cook us something different, we ended up with PB&J for dinner if we didn’t like what was cooked.

We told our kids, no, you don’t have to eat it, but we’re not making anything else. Our kids did not become fussy eaters.

I had some garlic bread today.

Yup. Mom occasionally made me something else when she served something to which I was allergic.

You forget whatever you make for yourself.

20 years of living in France… I have never even seen garlic bread… When I ask for it… they look at me as if I’m crazy…

Wow, was my father strict in that regard! I learned early on to turn off my tastebuds and eat whatever was served!

We never insisted, just encouraged. And as shocking as it may be our kids like broccoli. Still working on mushrooms, though.

Dismays me to see incorrect grammar, even in the comics. Should be “asks” but at least you didn’t put “axe.”

If she’s serving mostly pizza, I don’t know many kids would object to the food.
