    I wonder how this would have gone if he’d broken the question up, rephrased it more conversationally, and left out all the extraneous detail: “What’s The Red Badge of Courage about?” “Does it have any examples of [specific literary device I’ve just learned about]?” He still wouldn’t have been able to sneak this by her, but she might have been willing to help him focus his ideas.

    Also, isn’t that more of a middle school novel? I seem to remember it being so. I definitely didn’t read it in high school.
