Seems like everybodies a producer when you read the credits!

So what does an executive producer do!

A film producer is a person who oversees film production. Either employed by a production company or working independently, producers plan and coordinate various aspects of film production, such as selecting the script, coordinating writing, directing, editing, and arranging financing.

The producer is responsible for finding and selecting promising material for development. Unless the film is based on an existing script, the producer hires a screenwriter and oversees the script’s development. These activities culminate with the pitch, led by the producer, to secure the financial backing that enables production to begin. If all succeeds, the project is “greenlit”.</em<

The producer also supervises the pre-production, principal photography and post-production stages of filmmaking. A producer is also responsible for hiring a director for the film, as well as other key crew members. Whereas the director makes the creative decisions during the production, the producer typically manages logistics and business operations, though some directors also produce their own films. The producer must ensure the film is delivered on time and within budget, and in the latter stages before release, will oversee the marketing and distribution of the film.

In the News world the Producer gathers all the news he/she feels are newsworthy, and sorts it out for the writers to write the scripts the anchors read on the air!

They put money into the movie. That’s how many actors get the parts. “Do you want me to read or do you want 50 million?”

Kinda like the conductor of an orchestra, if the conductor also raised the money to pay for everything.

Watch the series The Offer. It details how producer Albert Ruddy got a movie made that did well. The Godfather. How he had to raise the money, deal with the studio, get a script wrote, cast the actors, find locations, etc. And deal with a certain Italian-American organization. One bone he had to throw to them, the word “Mafia” never is spoken in the film.

He produces.

Invest money or allow them to put your name in the credits without doing anything and get paid for it.

Aren’t producers the ones who coordinate the money?

In my short time in the Industry, Producers were the only people who could say “No” to directors with insane visions.

From what I ‘ve seen they mostly just coddle the talent, make sure the catering is exactly right and the espresso machine is fired up. The executive producer is the one who goes out begging for money from investors or advertisers for TV. Not jobs I would ever want. I dated a makeup artist once that was on-call for studios. It didn’t last long but I got to meet Tom Selleck. Nice guy, or he was. I heard about him stealing water for his crops.

They provide the cash!

A writer writes. A director directs. A producer… produces. Makes sense to me.

Should have named him Chuck, as in Lorre, one of the more prolific sitcom producers in recent times…

I’ve wondered the same thing about publishers for newspapers.

The Executive Producer does nothing more than put money into the movie.

No wonder TV is called the boob tube!

The title "producer’ is much more nebulous when used in the recording industry.

And they’re totally different jobs in TV vs. movies.

I’m a Producer … one’s a Registered Nurse and the other is a School System Quality Leader (former teacher of chillins).

Heh heh — I just sent this to my son-in-law! Who is, yes, a producer! And I always wonder exactly what he does.

My understanding is that producers get the project started and ensure that everyone is there to do their jobs and and do them. Maybe strips like these are why in part ‘Pearls’ has yet to show up in animation. Producers and others in the media might not like his criticism.

Yeah but you can still get awards from your peers……

I can’t speak for movies and TV, but in music, the producer is integral in actually producing music. Bands and artists write and compose (and sometimes produce), but the producers/engineers are the reason the music you buy sounds the way it does.

Producers, for the most part, put up the money. That’s pretty much all they do.

You can name many leading men. You can name many leading ladies. You can name many famous directors.

Name ONE producer!!

It depends — is he a producer, a line producer, or an executive producer? Because the exec producers tend to be mixed bags…
