I can’t remember which book, but Jerzy Kosiński had a character who did this; he had a General’s uniform from a nonexistent army. With the uniform and the right attitude he got tons of respect.
The sad thing is that there are all kinds of people who try this kind of thing.
A friend’s father took his demob suit & dyed it black. When he wore it, people took him to be a priest, so he took advantage of any favours offered.

And I’ve seen active servicemen claiming the ridiculous rank of Sergeant-Major. Wait, what?
