Any time I have a problem Pi is always the answer. I always prove my work…sometimes with an 80 proof coffee.

    6 squared = 36, divide by 2 = 18, times 3 = 54, plus 4 = 58Not sure why () is around the 3 when it should be around the 6^2/2

The answer is 10. The notation 2(3) is acceptable as the product 2 and 3. If the 6 squared were intended to be multiplied by 2 then that product must be written in parentheses.

I’m not a math person at all but in class, I remember being taught, “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” as the order of operations. Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction, left-to-right. Reducing the parentheses to their lowest form is already done, 3 = 3. 6 * 6 = 36. Multiply 2 * 3 = 6. Divide 36 / 6 = 6. Addition 6 + 4 = 10. Or you can use the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and just say “42” no matter what. Although I think in the second book (spoiler alert, if that’s still possible) when Arthur and Ford are pulling the Scrabble tiles from the knotted towel they came up with “What do you get if you multiply 6 by 9?” “You mean that’s it?” said Ford. “That’s it.” “Six by nine. Forty-two.” “That’s it. That’s all there is.”

I’ll stand by the answer being 58. While I understand the argument that operations inside parentheses are to be done first, in this case, there is no operation to be done — all that’s inside the parentheses is a 3. All that means is that what precedes it (6 squared = 36 divided by 2 = 18) is then to be multiplied by 3 to get 54. Add 4 and you get 58.
