The third Robin from the sun? Spring sprung it’s spring-a-ling-a-ding-dong here quite some time ago. Followed by near summer temps. Then Winter said, OH NO YOU DON’T, for 2 whole days… Then Spring resprung again. So i’m expecting either Winter’s return or hot lava to fall from the sky very soon.
I miss robins, cardinals, blue jays, and redwing blackbirds. We had them in IL, IN, MN, NJ, and WI, and even in MN. We have more monochrome birds here. Bear loves watching them. She thinks they’re out there just for her amusement.
I don’t remember seeing the first robin this spring, but I sure as heck heard them — and everybody else with feathers — singing up a storm mid-February. The trees were budding in January, too. Spring came wayyyyy too early this year.
Lupin’s robin at the beginning of the month wasn’t yet spring, and if Puck’s was early enough last week, it would still have been winter as well. So I say this one qualifies as the first robin of spring.
I saw the first butterfly of spring a few days ago! It was a zebra swallowtail and it was on my neighbor’s flowering tree, which I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know what is. It’s a huge tree but blooms like a fruit tree.
The UK voted the robin as the national bird around 1960. There, the robin is associated with Christmas.
Fun fact: “Have you noticed a Robin’s red-breast is actually orange? The bird was named before the English language had a word for the colour ‘orange’. Many things that were really orange were called red instead, even though we did have the word for ‘orange’ as in the fruit. The colour orange was not named as a colour in English until the 16th century. The name for the colour comes from the fruit.”
The same is true in Welsh — robin goch, red robin.
I saw the first robin on February 3. My daffodils have already bloomed and are starting to wither. I saw the first buzzard yesterday. (The return of the buzzards is a big deal every March 15 in Hinkley Ohio.) We’ve had two separate tornado outbreaks. That’s my least favorite sign of spring. We’ve had several days of highs in the 70’s. I still haven’t seen a red winged blackbird nor heard their rusty hinge squawk.
First thought: More robins than I can count are hanging out around our complex this week. I suspect they are taking advantage of any worms that are being displaced by the crew replacing our drainage pipes.
Second thought: Since a certain portion of our local robin population no longer migrates, my technical first sighting of the year was in January.
I live in a valley in Northern California where robins overwinter, so they arrive in November as a sign of impending gloom until there are masses of them shouting in the trees. (Alfred Hitchcock jokes are made.) The cats love to watch them eat our berries and bed down in the blackberry bushes. This month, they have been flying away to be recognized as the third robin of spring elsewhere.

Now that we’ve seen robins in the ‘hood, maybe we’ll see the elusive Friar Puck…

All robins are special.
I saw my first robin of the year in January. I’m not sure if it just arrived or decided to spend the winter here.
Last week, there was a flock of robins enjoying the good eats in a grassy area of the park.

The only sign of spring here so far has been near-incessant rain. We need it for sure, but I’m ready for warmer temperatures.
marilynnbyerly 8 months ago
I don’t think the robins ever left. The winter was considerably warmer than normal.

Don’t you just hate it when you excitedly bring news to someone and they just say I know about it. I knew about it a week ago?

I wonder if Lupin saw a real robin earlier in the month, or if it was a side effect of eating all that cake.

We have a bonded pair of doves that frequent our birdbath, as well as robins, cardinals, and bluejays. The blue jays are quite mean.

I’m feeling happy today
Gonna pack my cares in a whistle
Gonna blow them all away
What if I’ve been unlucky?
Really I ain’t got a thing
There’s a time I always feel happy
As happy as a king
When the red, red, Robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along, along
There’ll be no more sobbing
When he starts throbbing, his old sweet song
Oh, wake up, wake up you sleepy head
Get up, get up, Elvis get out of bed
Cheer up, cheer up, the sun is red
Live, love, laugh and be happy
What if I’ve been blue?
Now I’m walking through fields of flowers
Rain may glisten but still I listen for hours and hours
I’m just a kid again doing what I did again, singing a song
When the red, red, Robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along
When the red, red, Robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along, along
There’ll be no more sobbing
When he starts throbbing, his old sweet song, oh
Wake up, wake up, you sleepy head
Get up, get up, Elvis get out of bed
Cheer up, cheer up, the sun is red
Live, love, laugh and be happy
What if I’ve been blue?

He met a plucky bird who’s not afraid
And though the cats were rather glad
Well, Tommy had to laugh
His bird was the third seen by the staff
I’d love to hug Thomas ❤️
