Pray tell how Arlo has come of age without already knowing that.

A company I worked for gave us coffee mugs with gold plating, one day my brother in law put it in the microwave and got quite a surprise when the popping started.

If it has a gold ring around the top do not put it in the microwave. I have a few like that and I’m careful about that. I have many coffee cups, I collect them and all of them are safe in the microwave except those.

Isn’t gold a metal?

NO metal good.

Everybody must get stoneware.

I’ve had my favorate two coffee mugs over 40 years, use one daily and love the mug. Smaller top than the bottom so the coffee stays warmer.

While it may not explode, depending on the metal content of the clay that was used to make the cup, it can be quite hot after nuking. We have dishes of the same design but bought at different times and some come out hotter to the touch than others.

I use a coffee mug that is thermal. It’s awesome, it keeps my coffee warm to the last drop!

My “Latte Jed” Farside mug does not handle the microwave well. The handle gets hotter than the coffee.

Though the contents can sometimes explode.

I’m with Arlo on this one. Don’t do it.

I’m pretty certain I’m an anomaly here, but I never have that problem. I’ve never had a cup of coffee in my life.

At panel three I thought Arlo thought he had turned on the microwave without putting his cup in it.

But it will crack

Drink the coffee fresh: no need to microwave.

My son gave me my coffee mug 25 years ago as a birthday gift. Aside from a chip along the rim and the graphics on it having been mostly worn away from repeated washings, it still holds my morning coffee just fine!

My favorite won’t explode either, but the clay used to make it has a high iron content, so it gets hot. I just keep it out of the microwave, I have lots of others that have no problems.

I have read that hand-thrown ceramic mugs can have issues where the handle attaches to the mug. If I remember correctly, it has to do with the seam not being completely tight.

Maybe not…but it will end up with the handle directly in the back!

It might, you never know.

That’s why I have two Iron man coffee mugs…

No, but if you put your Dr. Who mug in the microwave, the TARDIS will no longer travel from side to side.

I’m not so sure. Mine was a handmade gift from before microwaves. I don’t want to take that risk.

Occasionally, very occasionally these days, improperly prepared ceramics will explode (or at least crack) when heated in a microwave.

I knew a woman who had a permanent scar because the wrong kind of brick was used in a fireplace. A brick exploded and filled the room with shrapnel.

Many mugs and pottery dishes contain dielectric minerals in the cay, that will heat to dangerous temperatures when used in a microwave. Quick check, microwave the mug for 20 seconds on high, If warmed, don’t trust it.

I had some thick plastic plates. I married. Patsy microwaved food on them. Pieces blew off every time. She didn’t realize they were not microwavable until she blew up the last one.

Such is life.

In our last microwave quite some mugs had the glazing popped off. And even in our new one some mugs become (very!) hot while the content stays cool.

When I used to work in an office with others some decades ago we would have coffee break and I would drink coffee. I stopped when no longer in that office.

I drink a cup of tea after dinner for medicinal reasons – suppose to help one of my medical conditions – forget which one. I have a very nice tea pot in which to heat the water on the stove.

He just made his hot cereal for late night snack (since I started this post). Can he use the hot water left in the pot – no, he has to heat the water in the microwave.

I should explain, I guess, that I also do 18th century cooking demonstrations over a campfire so perhaps with “this many centuries” of cooking experience, perhaps microwaves are just too “new” a thing for me. But then again – cleaning a pot is easier than climbing up to the top of my refrigerator where the microwave is kept to clean it out.
