I was thinking abut this the other day. People talk about the companionship they get from their pets. However, it’s always a one-sided relationship, isn’t it? The pet owners are in control of the relationships with their pets, and while they get some benefit from it, the pet isn’t in control. (And I have cats who have their demands. Even then, I’m till in control.) The only significant relationships are among peers where you are forced to deal with the autonomy of your companion and still make the relationship work. Of course, there are toxic people who want to try to control the relationship and paranoid people who believe that any autonomy on the other person’s part is an attempt to control the relationship. However, these dynamics can be approached maturely and worked through. You never get this from pets.
Two members of the present clowder are adopted from the shelter and the third was a foundling and the fourth just wandered into the yard one morning and decided to stay. They all get along and have us wrapped around their little paws.
It’s bad enough that she shot the dog but then she writes about it in her book. You have to wonder who she’s trying to appeal to (actually, I don’t have to wonder at all).

I’ve been eating next door for years. And by the way, you’ll find my parting gift in your shoe.
