Put up a “No Squirrels Allowed” sign. It won’t make any difference, but it’s no more futile than anything else you could possibly do in that situation.
I have had it with squirrels eating my bird seed, so I bought a squirrel proof feeder. It’s works great. There are levers on the side that are only for birds feet. Once a squirrel figures it out they jump on the levers and can’t hold on because the levers give way.
They make bird seed impregnated with hot pepper that will stop that short. The birds can’t taste the hot pepper. The squirrels can. And it’s fun watching the squirrels react to a mouthful of fire.
Parents lived in a woods, dad made 2 feeders with roofs and nailed them to the trees. Red squirrels were the scrappiest, they chased they chased everything out of the feeders including the fox squirrels.
My money is on the squirrels…we buy food that is marked indicating that squirrels don’t like it. It works and then we can feed the squirrels something else.

Our Rottweilers loathed squirrels. The English Mastiff could have cared less so long as they didn’t drink from his water dish.

I like squirrels better than birds. Birds leave messes on everything and some are noisy..
