“Caveman Robot” didn’t last long as a strip. After this origin sequence the inventor is mostly forgotten, and we just follow the robot around as he worships. It got preachier than late-stage Johnny Hart, and readership plummeted.

Douglas Adams in “Dirk Gently’s Detective Agency” described a future robot that had been specifically designed to believe on the behalf of human beings, so they could get on with other things.
