An interesting book is Autobiography of a Supertramp by the Welsh writer W.H. Davies, who spent several years in the late 19th century living as a tramp in the U.S. He settled down in England after losing a leg trying to hop on a freight train in Canada, and eventually became successful as a poet. I looked the book up after finding out that the rock group “Supertramp” had used it as the basis for their name. (Not a fan of theirs, just found it an interesting bit of trivia.)
There are things in the book, including some of the author’s attitudes, that are a bit disturbing by current standards, but he never touches on this aspect of life on the road.

First one to hit the hay will get violated? The smiles on their faces mean they’re all trying hard to be that guy.

The sleepiest one needs to kill the other two with that sharp stick. Then go to sleep.
