In the sister painting, the creature is a horse in the front and bird tail in the back. Plus, Ruggerio is the one that is nude. Definitely not as interesting as this painting.
Sigh; both ‘human’ characters have the ever-so-common in these paintings teeny-tiny feet; she’s too chunky and WAY too young (it appears) for my taste or approval, and I hope she brought some sun block; but… the hippogriff doesn’t object to her riding – maybe he’s hoping for a vice versa….I dunno.

By letting Angelica steer, Ruggerio’s hands were free to do other things.

It might be fuel efficient, but it sure is ugly. Couldn’t he afford a nice brand, like a Pegasus?

/// Epic poem “Orlando the Furious”
has some details that I would call spurious.
They include (in Italian)
a half eagle, half stallion:
hippogryff, and a sea monster. Curious.
/// Orlando’s a brave Christian knight,
who for Charlemagne wages a fight
against Saracens, yet
this great cause he’ll forget,
for a pagan he loved at first sight.
/// She’s the Princess Angelica, and
several others compete for her hand.
She won’t Orlando wed.
Later, she’s to be fed
to the sea serpent, Orc, as was planned.
/// A bold Saracen knight loves her, too.
It is he, Ruggiero, who flew
eagle-horseback to where
she’d been chained naked there.
(It’s that chivalrous thing that knights do.)

His other ride is the earlier version with the donkey behind instead of horse behind. It was a really half-assed ride.

Of course the hawk-horse literally took off, but not so much in sales.

Somehow this reminded me of the movie “Ladyhawke”, starring Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Matthew Broderick.
