I remember when the Islamic State destroyed “The Buddhas of Bamiyan,” two ancient statues of Buddha in Afghanistan. Much of the world was aghast at the destruction of these giant statues of great historic and cultural importance. My memory is that some Buddhist leaders were a bit less outraged, pointing out that their religion downplayed the importance of material objects, including those statues.
