Schools courts players get paid now

College athletes will be paid as well as being granted scholarships. From NPR this last weekend. “On Thursday, the NCAA and the so-called “power five” athletic conferences reached a groundbreaking agreement that seeks to end the century-old tradition of amateurism in college sports by allowing athletes to receive pay directly from the colleges and universities they play for." And how are they going to manage to keep their grades up then, paid tutors?

The way the NCAA has treated athletes basically as unpaid slaves was terrible. Based on this cartoon, I guess you can’t win for working on a fix, either.

I’m going back to college – I bet they’ll pay me the big bucks when I sign up for Poetry, and History of Uruguay classes!!!

I’m ambivalent.

Players now moving every year in a chase for more money, so why should fans invest in any rooting interest? If the players you are cheering for this year will be gone next year, why cheer at all? Why go to games? Why spend money? Does this sound like the death of college sports? Yep.

College athletes should have been given an option; get paid for playing or get a free-ride scholarship but not both.

Might as well declare all colleges as the minor pro minor leagues and forget trying to continue the sham-scam of the student athlete.
