    The Bible just calls it the forbidden fruit, not an apple; it was later post-Biblical tradition that made it an apple. The change may have been influenced by the story of the golden apples in the Garden of Hesperides. It’s debatable if apples were even naturalised to the Middle East back when the story was first developed.

    I wonder if the phrase was originally, “An apple a day keeps the Devil away”, and they changed it to “doctor away” because, hey, no one likes doctors!

    The forbidden fruit was from the tree of knowledge as I recall. Eve became aware of her nakedness as was ashamed. The message I took from it was the people who wrote the book wanted people to not to seek knowledge.
