Down here in S. Florida, there were back-to-school ads right after the Fourth of July!!

Some schools start like first week of August. Here, it’s a bit more near the end of the month.

When I went to school it started a week into September. August was MINE!

Funny that I’m 64 today, and I STILL get that horrible, queasy-stomach feeling as soon as I see BACK-TO-SCHOOL displayed somewhere. As a child it was like the beginning of the end.

When I was in school we always went back the Thursday after Labor Day. I feel sorry for kids now. Having to go to school in August is just wrong.

At least they’re honest when they advertise “Back to School” sales. Around here they try to disguise it by calling it “Sales Tax Free Weekend”.

Saw our first parent, with 3 children, standing in the School Supplies Section, with several lists in his hand & a somewhat confused look on his face. Seeing as a lot of our schools start around Aug 15, it’s not too early to find the school supplies have been out since shortly after the 4th of July.

The schools in my town resume August 1st. There’s already been wailing and gnashing of teeth.

In a civilized world, school would never start before Labor Day.

It should cut to a pic of teachers going “PEANUT BUTTER! PEANUT BUTTER!”

Math quizzes, pshaw! Those are nothing. It’s the time consuming English “literature” book reports and term papers that are the really grueling holy terrors. Enough of that crap and you’ll never care to see another word of Dickens or Shakespeare as long as you live. (Take it from me…)

School here used to start the Wednesday after Labor here – and there are some 125 public school districts on the Island (private schools were the same). NYC used to start the Monday after Labor Day (week later than holiday). When young I assumed same the rest of the country was the same – shocked to find it out varied across the country.

We don’t have any children and only one niece is still in school (as opposed to college or out of college or working) and her school still starts the Wednesday after Labor Day this year.

My father would frequently tease us about the likelihood of schools going to year-around session, because kids weren’t needed on the farm during the summers anymore (this was over 60 years ago, I might add). I think he did it just for the humor, but to me the idea was terrifying, and I figured this also meant no breaks, unlike the way it really works out. Of course with year-around schools and frequent shorter breaks, maybe the students don’t have to deal with the “back to school” nonsense!
