In the early seventies I worked in a grocery store that under went major remodeling. This was done during “the energy crisis” with the new refrigerators the need for the air conditioners weren’t as great. However, customers were complaining about the waste of energy.

After spending a half hour in a cold store, upon leaving the store (on a hot day) you’re hit with a blast of hot air. The scorching pavement makes it even worse.

Unless you have MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and can’t stand to get hot because it makes you sick and woozy. Anything over 74 Fahrenheit and I need a small fan blowing in my face or I get nauseous. If I’m hot enough to break a sweat, I’m miserable! Pushing a cart full of stuff with a very painful twice-broke back adds to the stress too. Not all of us Pluggers are the stereotypical “always cold” old folks!

Someone explain to me why grocery stores ever changed to open cases for frozen and cold foods? I honestly don’t understand. To me it is like leaving the front door open during winter in North Dakiota saying you are letting in fresh air so you just keep the heat turned way up to balance it out. No wonder (and a lot of other crummy reasons) prices are so high – to pay for their AC. Oh, and yes, some stores are simply freezing because the ‘higher ups’ in the corporate offices control the temperature AND music. Crazy things going on these days.

I always wear a jacket or “cover shirt” because I carry a concealed weapon at all times. Don’t want to be first target for “active shooter.”

I’m the exact opposite. I am getting warmer as I get older.

It’s less expensive to cool the whole store than just the freezers and coolers which are less efficient at higher temperatures. Also, the produce lasts longer.

That’s because of all the open coolers they have No energy conservation there!

I’ve always been cold-blooded – my core temp runs in the low 97s – & I HATE the cold. In particular, I HATE the way most places keep their a/c on “refrigerator” all summer. (I keep mine on 78 at home.) If I had half the brains I was born with, I’d carry my windbreaker everywhere in summer, but I always seem to forget…

This time of year they chase me out of the frozen food section. Even if I bring my own pillow.
