Happy Independence Day to all American readers of Andy Capp from here in Britain. We British will be voting in our General Election today and will probably have a new Prime Minister and a new government tomorrow. You Americans will be setting off fireworks. On 5th November this year, we British will be setting off our fireworks and you Americans will be voting in your Presidential Election.
Today’s strip reminds me of one from Reg Smythe’s time which I have related before on this site. We see the outside of a house. One speech balloon from the house says, “Get out of my bed, you drunken fool!” The other speech balloon replies, “I’m no more drunk than usual.” The second of the two panels shows Andy running downstairs and saying, “It’s just that when you’re in the wrong bed, in the wrong house, in the wrong street, it’s more noticeable!”
Well, the houses do look sort of alike. I once had a family member who lived in row housing across the street from the local foundry. One had to watch the house numbers closely when visiting.
One night, when I was a young, irresponsible sailor, I had to go back to the ship while we were in Subic Bay because I had singlehandedly polished off a pitcher of Mojo and couldn’t see straight. I managed to get back to where the ship was berthed but wasn’t sure which forward brow I was supposed to come up on.
I actually did that once. At seven years old. We lived in a block of rowhouses, kind of like Andy’s council flats, I fell asleep at the drive in and didn’t wake up until we got home. I stumbled up the stairs, opened the door and wondered why nothing looked right. While I stood there, the couple came downstairs and found me just as my dad arrived. Mildly embarrassing, but the couple knew me. We all said good night.

Good thing the walls are so thin. Otherwise Flo wouldn’t know where Andy was.

time for either new glasses, or new beer.

Reckon their houses attach, with a shared wall. No advantage for those who crave privacy.

Probably happens a few times a week. Hey, we’ve all been a little tipsy sometimes

Time to lock doors and place chairs under door knobs and use chain bolts and deadbolts and secure windows also.

The question is Where is Chalkie?

Where’s Chalkie? He should just roll Andy out the door.

So . . . Do all houses in UK have the same lock/key? If so, I’m major surprised Andy hasn’t faced this before.

Andy, you should question where you are. I mean who’s the sober one here.
