I was briefly tempted to explain “clapping the erasers” to younger readers, but then remembered that nobody on GoComics is too young to not understand it.

Nice to know Spiff’s spaceship has smoke dischargers. It is a very small cabin to be in for so long a time…….

Seems like Calvin will be spending more time in the principal’s office than Agnes.

Twice in the first half-hour back at school! Calvin is really having trouble readjusting after a glorious summer of freedom.

In contrast to this, the story arc about his duplicates had Calvin tell them, “Geez! You guys are making me look bad! Even I don’t get sent to the Principal’s Office EVERY day!” Presumably he readjusts to school after the first week or so.

Before getting to the clapping erasers part (something that will leave millennials clueless) The Count thought Calvin was going to let Freddy out.

Minor point, but if this is the morning of the first day of school, the erasers shouldn’t be full of chalk dust already. (Unless they were never cleaned last year.)

I wonder if kids even clap erasers any more. My daughter’s school had whiteboards instead of chalkboards. How typical is that?

Evidently the Cavin’s teacher was able to cut through Calvin’s defense…I’m guessing the smoke screen jut wasn’t large enough.

I remember being asked by my teacher in elementary school to go outside and beat the erasers against the walls of the school to clear them of chalk dust. I think those students who only experienced whiteboards missed out on such adventures.

I wonder what chalk is/was made of back then? Would it be considered toxic today? I remember breathing a lot of it; and second-hand smoke, and car exhaust, and gasoline fumes, and cow methane…etc…. as a kid.

    In the news today:

TJ Klune says ‘Calvin & Hobbes’ inspired a ‘Somewhere Beyond the Sea’ character

The author, whose new novel is a sequel to ‘The House in the Cerulean Sea,’ aims to celebrate the trans community and hopes we can ‘be kinder to each other.’

I actually liked being given the job of clapping out the chalkboard erasers in elementary school. We would have to go outside first though.

Try not to get all clapped out before 9:00 a.m.

Now I think chalk dust is considered a health hazard and those fumes from the whiteboard markers are supposed to promote longevity (or something).

At one point in grammar school my job was cleaning the erasers. And only once a week, on Friday afternoon (which of course made the job a bit more bearable, since it meant the weekend was upon me). I didn’t have to clap them, though. I had to take them to some back room somewhere and run them over some sort of suction machine. It meant I wasn’t breathing in clouds of chalkdust, which was nice, but man oh man was the air in that room dry!

We’re you made to clean the erasers at school? New research proves you may have been exposed to harmful lung damaging chalk dust which might cause cancer or the need to cough up big wads of slimy green sputum. Call Calvin and Hobbes at 555-GET-CASH.

Don’t want to psychoanalyze characters in this strip, which Waterson hated and I respect his motives. But, having a bit of knowledge in psychology, it looks like Calvin could be affected (if he was a real boy obviously, he is just a comic character) by Maladaptive Daydreaming (MD). Since the 1970s it has been suspected, during the 1980s while research on ADHD began to get started it was discarded since many believed it could just be what today we call “inattentive ADHD” symptom. And it was further confused since MD cause deficit disorder itself, but is different. MD affected individuals to escape a situation start….
