You forgot that after mating and maybe while still alive, the bears, eagles, crows and gulls will have salmon sashimi.
No wonder all those Bachelor/ette shows are so fishy.

We were in Alaska a number of years ago and had stopped at a very small town. There was a stream no more than 2 feet wide and about 8 inches deep salmon were swimming up. I found it fascinating to watch, pondering such a life cycle.
