It would be a lot funnier if that wasn’t true.

I have my 4th appointment for renewal today. First time, I couldn’t find my birth certificate, second, didn’t have a document that I didn’t know I needed. Third, broken arm and couldn’t drive. Wish me luck for today!!!

You just order another. They’ll give you all the copies you want.

I’m sure this is a direct quote that someone, sometime, somewhere, had actually heard…

When I was born, my parents were given a notice of registration of birth. It had nothing else, just “we are telling the state he was born.” My father guarded it conscientiously and told me to never lose it. Turned out that it was useless and decades later I had to contact the state to get a real one.

I had to go through similar red tape recently to get my state’s REAL ID. I had all the proper paperwork and still ran into a snag. There was a hit on my name in the Georgia Department of Driver Services database. There was another guy with the same exact name and birthdate as me who skipped on a DUI back in 1996. 28 years ago. I’ve never driven a car in the state of Georgia in my life. The Georgia DDS knew I wasn’t the same person. The Douglas County Superior Court knew I wasn’t the same person. But the case was so old the Douglas County Superior Court did not have the case in their records. I had to get the Douglas County Probate Court involved. The probate court ignored my phone calls and emails for days. Eventually, both the probate court and I had to FAX a “Not the same person letter” on the same day to the Georgia DDS. The 1990s called, they want their FAX machine back. What a bunch of B.S.

If the morons who set up the Georgia DDS database used the Social Security Number as a key identifier, I wouldn’t have had a problem. You know, the SSN, the country’s de facto national ID number?

What ID number do Americans use to file their taxes, @Surly Squirrel? Golly gee willikers, I think that might be the social security number.
