Arlo, good cooks only need the space in front of them to work their magic, at least that’s all I ever had to work with. From Janis’ point of view, that’s all the space that will need cleanup.

Sure, Arlo. As long as you do the dishes.

The bigger the kitchen, the bigger the mess.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Janis cook. Does Janis not care because she never does any cooking or is it because size really doesn’t matter to her?

We have had both small and large kitchens. She and I both agree that a larger kitchen works better for us. I do clean up after myself as I am cooking, and often clean up her messes as well. Not always, but often and she does the same.

I’m single and turned the dining room into an extension of the kitchen. I have several of those chrome shelves with pots, pans and appliances. I built an extra countertop in there too. The kitchen itself is fairly big. Do a lot of cooking and baking.

I know how he feels, I stir fry a lot of Asian dishes and I (guess it’s just me) need space to prep before I start. Once you start stir fry, there is usually not a lot of time to stop and do something you forgot, I need the lay out.

The worst thing in my too small kitchen is the stove is on a very small island, so if I cook anything that splatters (bacon) it goes all over the floor.

When we looked for the home we purchased 5 yrs ago the first thing I checked was cupboard space in the kitchen. The more the merrier.

I’m with Arlo. Did a kitchen remodel and added cabinets and most importantly, added three feet to the kitchen island. Made a huge improvement in utility. Two of us can actually work simultaneously.

One of the remodels this house has had doubled the size of the kitchen. I believe it was 3-4 owners ago. All top-end built-in fixtures, including the trash compactor. That gives you a clue about the era. We use it to store recyclables.

More room and more utensils only mean more of a mess to clean up afterwards. Axe me how I know…

A small kitchen with a large butler’s pantry for all of those appliances and extra groceries and paper towels, a pantry in the kitchen. A convection double oven, white glass 36-inch cooktop, an island for the guest to sit around while we cook, lots of lighting, oh wait, that isn’t a small kitchen at all is it?

Arlo will also need an enormous sink in which to wash all those pots and pans!

A problem with cooking in older age is that the standing and some of the repetitive movements can be hard to bear.

Paradoxically, when we lose dexterity or whatever is missing in our activities we tend to interpret it as not interested in it anymore.

I do most of the cooking and don’t need much space but I could use more storage. When I had the kitchen enlarged I thought I had enough cabinets built. Seems I was wrong. Too many new gadgets.

My cabin is 650 square feet. The kitchen is not a big attraction. The refrigerator holds about 2 6 packs of soda. We eat out.

My wife has enough pots, pans, dishes, etc. to feed 50 people but it’s only the 2 of us. I get tired of trying to keep them sorted out.
