When I lived in AZ, I had 3 tomato plants on the west side of my house. With the housing code block fence they got about 2 hours of HOT sun daily. I couldn’t give away the tomatoes I had so many

August 8 is National Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day! Now you know and can participate if you want. This year my zucchini plants produced only 21 and now they have mostly died. So I have started several more new ones in another bed. I share my zucchini with my daughter.

One of my other favorite comics had the heroine making both zucchini casserole and muffins. Dad said the family is more likely to eat the muffins, so give the casserole to the new neighbors. THERE’S a welcome, eh?

Years ago my family came out of church to find our car filled with zucchini and my son exclaimed, “Man, our car isn’t even safe at church!” The kids knew I’d made a pact with God, if He provided it, I’d fix it. Sure enough I borrowed my sister’s recipe book, “101 ways to fix zucchini” and used it all summer! Their favorite was zucchini cake. I loved them all except my husband’s zucchini stew, it tasted okay except overcooked zucchini is mushy.

Years ago my neighbour planted cucumbers in his garden. A lost every day he’d go out and examine the vines. One day I went to the local market and bought this huge zucchini, which looks fairly similar to a cuke, and under the cover of night, slipped it into his cucumber patch. The next morning he was at my door, proudly displaying the vegetable. Boy, he was one happy gardener … until I pointed out it was a zucchini and asked him if it had been attached to the vine. Great fun!

Just yank the roots out and plant something else. The few time you really need one, just get it at the store. Nobody wants your bags full of them.

I remember reading many years ago about someone who couldn’t bear to throw them out, so they’d wrap them up like a gift and leave them on the seat of their unlocked car. Eventually someone would steal the package, thinking they were getting something valuable!… (of course if they liked zucchini, they struck it rich! If not, oh well…)
