COOL, the interview of Tom’s avatar by Tom’s avatar about how only TOM is interesting is OVE— Gol Dang It. A DIFFERENT Tom is going to regale us with his 1001 Batuikan Nights stories. Hey, Tom—C&J’s big hit was “YESTERDAY’S GONE.” Ya didn’t learn anything from that?

Will this lead to a week of strips in which Batty’s surrogates condemn new-fangled media like CDs (which had only been around for five years when Crankshaft made its debut), MP3s and streaming?

Or a week of dialogue free strips in which Jff stares at album covers and laments all the hot-mama college girlfriends he passed by to end up with Pmm? Culminating in Willie & Julio’s “All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” on Saturday, of course.

Place your bets, ladies and gents (and Gents)…

Well I’m sure glad they made a big deal about Batton being called “Captain Eight Track” and then totally did not address it.

I loved you all the summer through

I thought I’d found my dream in you

For me you were the one

But that was yesterday and yesterday’s gone

We walked together hand in hand

’cross miles and miles of golden sand

But now it’s over and done

‘cause that was yesterday and yesterday’s gone

    We had such happiness together

    I can’t believe it’s gone forever

    Wait ’til summer comes again

I hope that you’ll remember when

    Our love had just begun

I loved you yesterday and yesterday’s gone

    We had such happiness together

    I can’t believe it’s gone forever

    Wait ’til summer comes again

I hope that you’ll remember when

    Our love had just begun

I loved you yesterday and yesterday’s gone

    Yesterday’s gone

    Yesterday’s gone

    Yesterday’s gone

Jeff will always remember the day he walked into University Records that spring morning. The soft chime of the doorbell signaled his entrance, and as he stepped inside, his eyes were immediately drawn to a girl standing by the display of 60s classics. Her golden hair shimmered in the sunlight streaming through the window, and in that instant, Jeff knew she was someone special.

With a surge of confidence, Jeff straightened his jacket and made his way toward her, trying to channel the charm of a Hollywood movie star. As he approached, he noticed she was holding a Chad & Jeremy record. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth—he had always been fond of their music.

“Chad & Jeremy,” he remarked, his voice casual but warm. “That’s a great choice.”

She turned to him, and the world seemed to slow down. Her eyes sparkled with a kind of quiet joy, and her smile was both shy and inviting. “Yeah,” she replied softly, “they’re one of my favorites. Their harmonies just… take me back.”

Jeff nodded, feeling a connection between them. “I know what you mean. There’s something timeless about their music, something that makes you feel like you’re in another time and place.”

As they stood there, talking about the music they loved, Jeff felt a warmth he hadn’t experienced in a long time. It wasn’t just the shared appreciation for Chad & Jeremy—it was her. The way she spoke, the softness in her voice, and the light in her eyes made him feel like this moment was meant to be.

By the time they left University Records, Jeff knew he had found something special. They weren’t just two strangers who happened to like the same music. They were something more, something that felt like the start of a new journey together, one that began with the sweet sounds of Chad & Jeremy playing in the background.

Chad and Jeremy continued to perform together occasionally for many years. Chad has now passed on, as has Gordon from Peter and Gordon … but now Peter and Jeremy occasionally perform together, singing the hits of both duos.

This is a nice memory for me – Chad and Jeremy had some great tunes with fine harmony.

I will say that in my neighborhood, and school, most of the boys had not yet grown their hair out quite as much as depicted here, with the big mutton chop sideburns. Chad and Jeremy were early 1964, riding in on the wave of the Beatles and the British Invasion, and my school did not allow hairstyles like that yet.

Chad and Jeremy’s heyday was approximately 60 years ago. This means Ed’s son in law (pictured above) is at least 80 years old and Ed is crossing into his second century. Wasn’t the FW time merge supposed to fix all this? Or has Bat-hack forgotten he did that already?

“I remember leaving the store that day without either the album or the girl.”

Not exactly Bernstein remembering with girl with the white parasol on the passing ferry, was it?

FYI, that picture is not from any actual Chad and Jeremy album. It’s the photo used on a 45 sleeve for their first hit, “Yesterday’s Gone.”

If you’re wondering why he’s into Chad and Jeremy rather than, say, Simon and Garfunkel, it probably has something to do with the fact that C&J appeared as themselves on the Batman TV series, meaning they are at least silver-age comics adjacent.

Man, what a memory. Used to go into the used record stores and built a collection of over 500. Nothing like rocking to an album with it’s memory scratches and skips, I remember that. Still have all my vinyl and a technics turntable, with big bass speakers.

Had the pleasure of seeing Chad & Jeremy at the legendary Fitzgeralds in Berwyn, IL a few years ago and was amazed at the great show they put on. It was a mix of their hits and unheard tunes, including some blues. I had no idea they were actually such excellent musicians. Frankly, it was a much fun as some Springsteen concerts. ’Tis sad that we lost Chad Stuart in 2020. Fortunately Jeremy Clyde marches on doing shows with Peter Asher of Peter and Goron (and famed producer of Linda Ronstadt and others).
