One of the pieces of advice I give people is not to have a strong light source behind them unless they are going for the witness protection program look.
Another piece of advice I give laptop users is to elevate the laptop so it is looking at the room and not the ceiling. I was on one conference where a man had his ceiling fan behind his head: biggest propeller beanie I’ve ever seen.
Also, if you plan to use an artificial background, make sure your video card and camera can support it. It’s very distracting when you lose body parts during an interview.
