Ah, the Ditch Digger… the lowest job that any parent could dream of to threaten their child with. “You’re gonna grow up to be a ditch digger!” Maybe one of those kids went on to invent the backhoe.

You could always plan on going to law school after you graduate, unless your folks won’t have enough money to put you through college.

Both “You’re In The Army Now,” and “Car Wash” are playing in the background. Both those songs mention digging a ditch.

I dunno, Charlie, ditch diggers get to operate heavy equipment, even back in the 70’s. I know I did. It was fun, but perhaps not a lifelong career.

If Charlie Brown takes a job as a ditch digger he would be vilified for taking a job away from an illegal border crosser and denying them free health care, housing and education.

Ditch diggers (Laborers) are making a minimum wage of 30 dollars an hour, beat’s McDonalds. Union Carpenters are making close to 50 an hour. UNION, I don’t know what scabs make. Happily retired Union Carpenter, I retired when we were only making 42 dollars an hour.

Another career choice: painting yellow lines down the middle of the road. The job will last a lifetime as the can of paint keeps getting farther and farther away

I enjoyed operating a ditch digger (back hoe and track hoe) did not do it for a living but for special projects it was a lot of fun and more fun when you could get the hang of it and make the motion smooth not jerky.

There is a winery in Paso Robles California that has a wine it calls ditch digger. Apparently when the founder went off to open his winery his father told him he would fail and end up digging ditches.

When I was growing up in the 50s, son of a pair of transplanted Appallachian hillbillies, I was told that there were only 2 choices. Go to college and be a professional, whatever that meant, or spend my life digging ditches. Turned out I’ve done all of the above! worked in warehousing to pay for college, had a career as an applied scientist, hobbies include carpentry – auto mechanics – blacksmithing, and after retirement went back to school in a subject that includes digging trenches! Point is that there are many paths to economic success, and learning “a trade” is just as good as going to college. Follow your interests and skills.
