    It is a part of all medical studies. Some of the subjects are going to die or suffer other negative outcomes. The question is whether the drug being tested is associated with (or even causes) a lower rate of negative outcomes.

    Some people with certain ailments have responded well to the placebo effect. And I recall one study that was getting such good results with the trial medicine, they got special permission to try it on everyone.
