There are tons of jobs in the trades that pay very well. Kids who go into the trades will have a good paying job and no school loan dept.

He’s going to end up being a lifelong Bachelor.

Some students think they are too sophisticated and cool to be skilled laborers.

I have a college degree and a binder full of Military Technical Certificates in Chemistry, Biology, Radioactives, HAZMAT, Emergency Management and Computer Modeling. I have done everything from scrub toilets to stand SAC Nuclear Missile Alert, run my own business, and salvaged ships, planes, cars, and lost jewelry. I’ve served on Ambulance crew, and Swift Water Rescue. I’m now a 72-year old retiree training Public Service divers for the State Guard. There is nothing wrong with honest labor. Get a job, any job. Do your job well and take pride in your work.

Yet, I’ve had many, many employers tell me that what they want teachers to do is train students to think critically. THAT is what someone is supposed to get out of a college education. IF it is done well. By the student, the university, the classes taken, etc.

Yes, people should consider the trades if that’s their skill set. But, to simply toss aside the Liberal Arts because it “produces nothing concrete”, is very short-sighted. Society needs people who can think too.

and I can predict the future. There won’t be jobs four years from now. How many of us went to school in a good period and graduated in a recession?
