US weapons restrictions were definitely early 1970s due to hijackings. In the Mel Brooks movie High Anxiety (1977), Mel Brooks and Madeline Kahn dress up as an old couple and stage a loud argument to distract the security people when the gun he is carrying sets off the metal detector at the airport. Look for the “airport scene” on Youtube.
