I saw a bumper sticker on a Tesla Model S that said “I bought this before we found out Elon is nuts”

I always thought it looked like one of those “Futuristic” vehicles out of some cheesy 70’s sci-fi movie.

EVs are the future. At the moment the battery technology is holding them back. I like a car with “legs” – my car has a 20 gallon tank and gets 37+ mpg on the highway. That’s 740 miles on a tank or more than twice what a current EV can do.

I do not believe, as a certain presidential candidate states, that I have to charge the car for three or four hours so I can drive it 15 minutes, but a recharge will take more than 5 minutes and charging stations are not as ubiquitous as gas stations.

Then there is the issue for city dwellers who may have to park their cars several blocks away. Where do they recharge?

My wife’s car, however, hardly ever leaves town and is parked in our driveway every night. An EV for her makes sense. My sister tells me that I should not buy one because Fox News says so.

It appears that EV companies like to draw attention by using odd styling. That is unnecessary since their drivetrain technology is so unique, and odd styles tend to sour public opinion more than entrance it. I can understand styling based upon lowest wind resistance in order to extend battery range, but all Musk did in this case is emulate vehicles from some Sci-Fi movies he likes.

I’ve seem several Cybertrucks recently, and even up close and in person they look fictitious. But no worse than many of the jacked-up pickups and SUVs chugging around. They are fast – I caught up to one at an Interstate toll booth, but then he took off and I could not keep up with it (I had a late model Mustang GT with the 5.0L V8, and I was not going to go over 95 mph which I was doing as the Cybertruck continued to pull away from me).

When I purchased my 2003 Element – which I still have – some folks said it looked like something out of a Japanese sci-fi movie. Now it looks completely routine. (I know it’s out of production.) I wonder if that silly Tesla truck will look similarly unremarkable in a few years.

For the record: Pinewood Derby® is a Cub Scout thing; at 12, you’re 2 years past Cubs.
