Actually, I believe a loss of the legacy media would be a good start. Comparing them to FOX, Newsmax, etc. the non-legacy have been much more accurate in the past few years.
It’s not just cable news. Our local paper does a regular feature called Tele-talk. They pose a question and then print the responses people phone in. The responses are often, or always, twisted into some political rant, even on non-political questions, usually from the same folks who write political diatribes to the Letters to the Editor regularly. This week it was “Who do you think won the debate?”. Fully half of the responses were Trump won, with some horribly twisted “logic” to back up their assertion. Mostly along the lines that the debate was unfair because Trump got live fact-checked and Harris not so much. Well, if you don’t lie at every opportunity, there’s little to fact check. Funny, though, how the Democrats could see, and admit, the Biden was lacking in that debate and do something about it. The Republicans, however, cannot.
We are going to have a problem similar to this. Sooner (hopefully) or later Trump is going to be gone (Fleeing the country, Jailed for life, Death by cheeseburger). There will be millions of MAGA Mobsters, who don’t know how to think for themselves wandering around dazed and confused (Hmm, what a great title for a song) since their Orange Felon is gone. What are we supposed to do with these people??
Sorry Lars, it’s not just cable news, it’s all news outlets. They all have an agenda today. If they don’t outright lie, they ignore certain sides of a story and slant it to they agenda.
Even before recorded history Diogenes of Sinope, who was a Greek philosopher and one of the founders of Cynicism, we’ve had to search for the truth. In the election between Adams and Jefferson the rumors, attacks, fabrications and outright lies were in the newspapers of the day. Regardless the media, from word-of-mouth to the internet, the truth is elusive. It has always been up to the individual to separate the fly poop from the pepper, not the media source. An informational ‘buyer beware’. We are fortunate today to have entire libraries in our own home, the internet. It’s all there, the lies and the truth. It’s up to you to figure it out.
There are way, way, way more than just 2 sides to everything. Political views are on a spectrum from left to right, and accuracy is on a spectrum from top to bottom, and you can see it all on display in this interactive link on media bias:
adfontesmedia.Com/interactive-media-bias-chart/
You can type in the name of any news source you’re particularly interested in, and it’ll show up on screen, highlighted among all the rest. Do note that some things show up in multiple locations, depending on variations. CNN.com, for example, is different that CNN cable news. And Wall Street Journal financial news (on which billions of dollars worth of investments depend) are rock solid and reliable, whereas the opinion pages of the same paper are off-the-wall kooky right-wing.

Danae has the power to summon a space alien. That’s an impressive superpower.

We should just go back to the printed page, then. It took somebody’s money to publish a book, usually the kooks’ money.
That would stop most of the kooks who post their “facts” online.

And social media. That’s where the weirdest lies grow into full-blown rants.

At least Fox.
Or, there could be owners that are actually not dishonest.

Linear TV is not a growth industry, but it will be replaced with more social media, so not a good thing.

I wish the death of cable news was all it would take. But humanity has had a love/hate relationship with facts for a long, long … long time.

Once you realize that the news is just another group of entertainment corporations life becomes easier.

“Allergic to facts”. I like that. I’m stealing it. It explains a lot of stupidity going around on social media.
