Oh snap! Sorry Kevin, no free ride

“You need to report to….”. Sounds so militant. Yea, he tried to take advantage of it, but she could have been less abrasive and more understanding and gentle with her words.

Well. That didn’t work out

Special Education was a stigma back in the day. Hopefully Kevin doesn’t get teased and bullied. Maybe lose friends as well.

Years ago, the elementary school was on one side of the road and the ‘Special School’ on the other. Elementary school was overcrowded, so the other school offered the use of its extra classrooms. Several parents were outraged, they feared their kids would ‘catch the bug’ from the ‘special school’ kids. Sheesh!

Kevin clearly thought having a learning disability would be a free pass out of doing assignments. No such luck, buddy.

Ouch. Stuck with the “special” kids. I got a taste of that once. Love the kids, it’s the reaction of other people that’s unpleasant.

Take advantage of it, Kev — it’ll help. You could even become more snarky!

Poor Kevin doesn’t even get to break the news himself.

Where I’m from, dyslexia isn’t considered a specific learning disability so no special ed help is available, but often a child has others areas of learning difficulties that may allow an IEP to be written. It will be interesting to see where this story line goes.

Back when I was a college tutor, I had a couple of students try the “I can’t do my homework, I have ” line with me. My response was always the same: "I’m a traumatic brain injury survivor who had to relearn how to read in my second year of high school. I have dyslexia, memory issues, and acquired ADHD. And I’m a straight 4.0, so don’t give me the “I can’t” line."

All of them decided it was in their best interest to do their homework. Whaddaya know, they all passed.

That would also be me!

That’s right, you don’t get out of it, you get more and you are expected to make progress.

The only “reward” for having trouble with schoolwork is more schoolwork.

So much for the get out of jail free card.

Funny, I initially read the last panel as “You need to report to the Special Education classroom for torturing”. I think I may still have some old issues from my school days.

At least it’s not neutering.

In the third grade they put me in special ed, but not for a reading disorder. They thought I needed to make more friends (I had 2 really good ones, but apparently that wasn’t enough)
