Drink MILK or EAT bread. That gets the capsaicins out of your mouth and down where they’ll eventually remind you of why we call the Pacific coastal regions “the ring of fire”.
Drinking water is not really good when you eat something very spicy. The best thing if something is to hot is dairy, such as milk or buttered bread. Rice is also good.
I’d just throw the tablecloth away! Calvin can never do things normal, like take a small bite to test it out, no, he has to take a big bite and suffer the consequences of his choice as well as the others at the table!
There are many cultures whose food has hot peppers, I can usually handle some pretty spicy ones, Thai food however is very hot imo, I hardly ever go over mild when asked how spicy.
Strange that Calvin will believe any weird “knowledge” that his father tells him—such as the sun only being the size of a quarter, or the world previously being in black-and-white—yet won’t believe him when he says that something is hot.
I actually liked spicy stuff at his age. We used to get these really good frozen burritos and they came in hot, medium and mild. We’d buy a bunch to have on hand for quick lunches or dinners. I’d always go for the hot ones.
Heh, even though it would obviously never happen, imagine if Paramount Pictures distributed a “Calvin and Hobbes” movie? The Paramount logo could play, and then have the test and stars fade to have just the mountain as Calvin’s narration begins, only for the mountain to erupt as a live volcano! Then after the last panel scene, the opening credits begin.

You know, there are restaurants with food so spicy that they make you sign a waiver. Maybe Calvin should try those places.

My wife makes a great chili. It’s on the mild side, but she makes “Boost” for the heat-lovers. It’s just pureed whole raw hot peppers.

From first three panels, I guessed Cal was on the way to blowing his stack over some imagined slight from Susie or someone else. Does fit his profile.
But the chili was a good reason. The only outcome was the destruction of the family meal. For Cal that is relatively harmless.

I have 2 recollections about “Hot Sauce”. Once, out with friends, I tried a very small amount of “Chinese Mustard”…
I. thought. I. was. going. to. die.
And, on a date with a Thai Woman, she cooked me a meal from her homeland. She said she cut way back on the spiciness. It did not seem like it… ☺

It’s not polite to guzzle your water like that, Calvin.

They are not eating chili. They have flat plates, you eat chili in a bowl. The dad is talking about chili SAUCE, it is a condiment you put on food.
