After reading too many “mysteries” where I was 100 pages ahead of the detective, I decided I was not smart enough to write something convincing in that genre.
Watson in the stories was probably under 40. He was also of above average intelligence. Don’t know why the Watson in the Rathbone movies was a dolt in late middle age. Maybe they decided to write the part for Nigel Bruce.
