If I remember correctly, there’s a scene in Dune where two characters interject quite a lot of humming into their dialogue. This goes on for several paragraphs without explanation before Herbert finally informs the reader that this is a form of secret language. The characters are speaking in the Harkonnen palace on a topic that’s definitely not safe to allow the Baron’s agents to overhear.
Sally today would need to practice her "like"s. "If I ever, like, have to, like, write a story where, like, a character says, “like”, I’ll be, like, ready". Arrrgggghhh!
