Second semester needs materials too. For all grades, instead of giving an apple-themed holiday gift, people could support teachers with shiny school supplies. Also, check with counselors and nurses about clothing, lunch money, and other needs. My district has a central building for clothes and shoes. Middle school students wear mandatory uniforms (nothing expensive) to reduce peer pressure and enforcement issues.

You have NO idea how many teachers used their OWN money to provide the proper supplies for their students. In Ontario, Canada, the Premier, Doug Ford promised to increase funding for healthcare and education if he was elected. He WAS elected and immediately CUT $1.2 BILLION from healthcare and education. He use that money to continue building his deceased brother’s Eglinton LTR line .. which was totally unnecessary. The LTR was not needed. He also promised to protect wetlands if elected for a second term. He was elected again, but got called out when it was found that during the election, he had been negotiating with developers to develop the very land he promised to protect. He had to back off. BTW, he is a member of the Conservative Party (Canadian Republican Party). He is also fat, blonde and a habitual liar like the Orange Pumpkin in the USA.

I watched an interesting documentary on countries (and states) with the best education outcomes. They all have several things in common despite varied demographics. 1) First and foremost, they trust their teachers and expect them to be well qualified — and well compensated. 2) They all fund the schools equally regardless of where they are located (ie., rich area or poor area). 3) They provide free meals for all students. 4) They have little or no homework outside of school and provide plenty of recreational time inside school hours. As an aside, they often have fewer hours in the classroom than poorer performing countries/states.

I have donated for years to classrooms thru Donors Choose. It is amazing with all the money the schools collect thru our property taxes that they can’t afford the basic supplies for the students.

Isn’t it amazing that teachers have to buy their own things, but the schools will spend $ on sports. Now I love sports as much as the next guy, but the classrooms should be taken care of first.

The very sorry state of our education system. When authorities expect parents to contribute to the school supplies, all it does is create a bigger divide between the economic classes. How do we expect to create a more equitable society when some have all the advantages?
