It’s probably easier to pick up in pubs if you worked on the British Antarctic Survey than as, say, a plumber in Milton Keynes.
Or if you had some people very interested in talking to you, that you’d prefer not to run into – not much chance of that at Rothera Station I’d expect.
Anyway, I assume that the duty is “all found” (all expenses paid) in addition to the £60,000. I can’t imagine you can shop for groceries in Antarctica. £60,000 clear would be pretty good pay.
The British Antarctic Survey is looking for 15 skilled plumbers to spend 18 months on its bases and ships near the South Pole to stop pipes from freezing, according to Reuters. Temperatures in Antarctica can reach -50 degrees Celsius (-122 degrees F). The BAS is hoping the Antarctic scenery will compensate for the low salary – workers will be paid a maximum of 18,888 pounds (about $30,000) a year, instead of the 80,000 pounds (nearly $128,000) an in-demand plumber could earn back home in England. If they want you to deal with frozen pipes, run, don’t walk. AWAY.

Nonprofits & charities will short you on salary and benefits just as fast as any corporation. Tale one for the cause.

Well, at least they’re transparent! I can see how this would appeal to someone with a more adventuresome spirit than I have

That would mean leaving my wife and my guitars behind, so that would be a no.

Why so many? Something about the mortality rate?

I got curious and found the following:

So, they really DID want 15 plumbers!
