Where does Alex get these stupid ideas? Her “egg-donor” along with her slimy stepfather?? If someone doesn’t set her straight, she may end up hacking government classified information!
I remember Mark interviewing Jimmy Thudpucker. The Jimster’s take was that music should be free on the internet and that musicians would get paid by doing live shows.
Tell that to the NEW musicians of your generation, Alex – they’re struggling to get a paying gig, and if it weren’t for you, they could get the recognition they deserve.
Pinned on the wall in the studio of my college radio station was album sleeve (remember LPs?) bearing the image of a cassette (remember those?) and the legend, “Home taping is killing music!” under which someone had inscribed, “And it’s about time!!”
Her dad should dock her pay for the fair value of each song she downloaded. Then tell her, “It is stealing and if you don’t accept this and change your habits, I will dock your pay for each song in your entire music collection. This is an important lesson about treating ALL people fairly.”
Wow, trying to justify a DB like Sean Parker is a bit of a stretch isn’t it? To quote Geko the Great, “Once up a time I said Greed is good, now it seems it’s legal” Yeah, Alex, the futures so Bright, I gotta wear shades! ;-) Happy Thursday Folks, Vote Yet ? ;-0
To repeat a comment that I accidentally posted twice yesterday:
The Internet descends from ARPANET, which was designed for the Defense Department to maintain command and control even in the midst of a nuclear war. This mad ambition was achieved by renouncing private property rights in information.
Any valuable store of owned data would have been physically targeted by a Soviet nuke; therefore all data is shared. The Internet’s architecture is of communal ownership of information.
The Net interprets censorship and paywalls as damage, and routes around it. So to defeat Communism, the Internet had to adopt it!
Although I realize this is a cartoon, I hope someday Alex does something for which she does not get paid because someone thought she was being “greedy”. Or perhaps she just thinks everyone should be totally altruistic and do everything for free.
iTunes provided an interesting step along the way of this evolution. For prices comparable to those of the prevailing physical medium of CDs and to the inflation-adjusted prices of vinyl, consumers could believe everyone got fair value from the deal. Meanwhile, an industry in panic over declining CD sales could celebrate an arrangement that looked to the consumer like a purchase but looked to the industry like a license. And artists…well, as always, they took what deals they could get to reach an audience, and the most successful could continue to do quite well in that system. They might even be able to afford to hire someone to manage their MySpace.

People just used to tape CDs or buy used ones, but for some reason that is okay.
But I’m weird. I like paying for movies, but not cable tv.

when you look at the price of movie tickets and the profits reported by studios it does become hard to have sympathy for them.

I’m not sure how this is different than tape-recording music from the radio.
tape-record , v. to make a recording of on magnetic tape.

Yeah! How dare those greedy musicians want to be paid for their work? I mean, everybody else works for free, right?

I remember back when I first learned about emails at work and then asking the boss how does the postage get paid.

Need a follow-up story where Alex has to move back in with her parents because a cheap AI is now doing her job.

Other people who think like this are responsible parents who care about the lessons their children learn.
