We buy pumpkin for my husband & one of my daughters – the other daughter & I can’t stand the stuff – and we can’t have apple because it makes me nauseous. Our 2nd pie varies from year to year; this year is lemon meringue.
I have a strong memory of having Thanksgiving Dinner when I was young and the very first time I ate minced meat pie. We drove up the D.C. to the Old Soldiers Home which was run by the Sister’s of Charity. My great aunt who was a nun, invited our family up there. Also, it was the first time I saw the Macy’s parade on a color TV, too. We only did a drive-by of all the prominent buildings and monuments, too
Am I missing the joke here? I am guessing it is supposed to have something to do with Andy’s pie, but it’s not as if they’re not going to have to eat her pie anyway (“oops – Quincy ‘accidentally’ got into Mom’s pie. Good thing we have four more…why are there four empty pie tins on Peter’s plate?”)
Before the jokes about Andy not making a “real” pumpkin pie, note that the iconic orange jack’o’lantern pumpkins are not the best for making pies, they are too tough and stringy. Butternut squash are actually the best for making “pumpkin” pie, and the variety of pumpkin that Libby’s uses for its canned pumpkin looks more like a butternut squash than a Halloween pumpkin. This is also the reason for “pumpkin pie spice”.
Do all bad cooks suffer from denial? When I taste my cooking and I know if it’s good or not, I’m not afraid of constructive criticism. The only times my turkey didn’t turn out was when my son decided it would be funny to tell me he’s arriving on Monday and then show up on Sunday not giving me enough time to thaw the turkey properly before being cooked which makes it chewy and ruins it for me. No matter, we’ve got that all worked out now.
Went to a Thanksgiving one year and the hostess had made a squash pie. It was Pumpkin but because she thought all her guests were as health conscious as she, or should be, she put no sugar in the recipe. That along with the dry turkey, no basting as fat is bad for you, and other “it is for your own good” decisions on her part we have not been back.
A family tradition that I always go by and have passed on to my kids is to have a piece of pumpkin pie for breakfast the next morning after Thanksgiving dinner. This of course requires that one be sure to save enough pie the night before.
Maybe it was in Foxtrot last year about this time, where Andi is angry at Peter for having eaten the two pies that she had in the refrigerator. His response was “Hey, there wouldn’t have been enough for everyone anyway!”. Me, I love pie but no way I could eat a whole pie in one sitting, let alone two (even when I was in my 20’s and had a rather voracious appetite)!
The typical thing my in-laws used to do was to have both a pumpkin pie and a mince pie for dessert after Thanksgiving dinner. The trouble was, no one ever wanted mince pie and everyone took a piece of pumpkin pie (the mince pie was eaten slowly over the next few days). Me, I usually felt sorry for the mince pie so had a small piece of it and a small piece of the pumpkin pie. I never understood why they bothered with the mince pie, other than it was “tradition”.
I have never liked pumpkin pie. Don’t like the texture and way too often it’s so sweet it’s sickening. I’ll take apple, blueberry, or mincemeat any day but pumpkin? NO!
A proper pumpkin pie is a healthful food! Squash, eggs, milk. Add a little sugar and a bit (easy there) of spice (nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice) — and there you go. Whipped cream of course.
Years ago during the fall holidays, every few years my wife used to organize an evening of “PIE” (for which she was famous in the neighborhood). She would make 2-3 pies (like apple, cherry, pumpkin) and others would bring in some really great selections, both homemade and bakery bought. Good times were had by all. PS: Some of us discovered that a bit of straight Jack Daniels goes down well with pecan pie!
Then there’s cheesecake. I had some at a nice Italian restaurant on Saturday. It had blueberry compote on it. GOD, it was good. Made me glad to be alive!
How does she have the idea that ONE pumpkin pie is enough for a family? Especially for Thanksgiving!? Plus, in our house, pumpkin is the only vegetable some of our pickiest children will eat.

Not pumpkin, let me out. OTOH everyone in the family prefers a different kind of pie/dessert so there is a lot, just all different.

Pumpkin pie is absolutely disgusting. Throw that thing in the garbage and bring out Dutch Apple for the win!

Okay but who brought the whipped cream? Just get the spray on cream and give each person their own can. That should do it.
