I know how she feels. When I was four my mother and Aunt left the husbands home and took me to visit a very wealth relative. They served us corned beef hash. ( The butler served it) I loudly announced that I hated corned beef hash. My mother must have been so embarrassed.
From Lynn’s Comments: I once invited a little friend for dinner—without first asking my mom. Mom was a generous person so I couldn’t understand why she was angry with me. I had no idea that we couldn’t afford to share the 4 pork chops she’d planned to cook, so she made was a “stew” out of them. I never did that again.
Peanuts Begins had a funny one the other day. Charlie Brown was at Patty’s house (the original non-Peppermint Patty) and she invited him to stay for dinner. He asked her what they were having and she said pork chops. He called his parents to ask what they were having “Stew?” Then he told Patty, “I’m staying!”
Better get used to a lot more to feed and provide healthcare for, Elly. Canada is going to have a lot of refugees coming in; crossing Canada’s border to try to get the freebies I promised them but could not deliver on.
As my mom would say… “then sit there and watch us eat for a while, then you can go.” Actually, that taught me to pick apart the food and eat what I liked. Geez, it’s nice to be grown up! LOL!
I was taught that when I was invited to someone else’s house to eat, to eat what they put before me because they went through all the time to make it and it may even be all they can afford to buy. I was visiting some new friends and I followed what i was taught but the wife noticed I wasn’t eating my green beans as much as rest of meal and she asked and I told her I really didn’t like them and she said i should have told her early and she would have made me a different vegetable. From then on she let me know what she was planning and if I didn’t like it she would add something extra to the meal that I would like. I think that it would be a good idea for a parent of a child who has invited another child to dinner to ask the child what they like or didn’t like or even call the other childs parents ahead of dinner to find out what they didn’t like or if they were allergic to any foods, it would make it easier for everyone involved.

Elly needs to learn to say no to April. Every time the kid begs or throws a tantrum she gives in.

I like the touch of Becky sitting on a book. That brings back the memory of my sitting on a copy of the Columbus, Ohio, Yellow Pages.

Lasagna – it’s what’s for dinner. Your choice is to eat it or not. I’m good with either choice.

Sounds like a strip in the B.A. era (Before April). The Pattersons are all at the farm.
Beverly Cruikshank: Hey everybody, Lizzie harvested these beets all by herself!
Elizabeth: Yay!
Beverly: Lizzie helped me cook these beets.
Elizabeth: Yay!
Dinner table. Aunt Beverly is serving everyone. She puts some vegetables on Elizabeth’s plate
Beverly: This is a serving of the beets that Lizzie did all by herself!
Elizabeth: I hate beets.

It looks like Becky’s parents never talked to her about the etiquette necessary when eating at someone else’s house.
