My father-in-law served in Viet Nam as a civil servant. He suffered from PTSD, but was not eligible for any treatment or counseling because he wasn’t military.
I discuss today’s strip on the Substack blog. It is very hard to draw commemorative strips for this day. Some of my relatives served in the military, but none of us love or loved war.
My husband was a non-combat veteran, still proud of his service in the Army Band at the White House. He played for funerals at Arlington, and played “Happy Birthday” for Pres. Eisenhauer.
I hope no one loved or loves war. Leaders sometimes deem it to be necessary. (I concede that those trying to expand their countries – Alexander, Genghis, Putin – may not hate war. Especially if they are winning.)
Thank you for spreading awareness of civilian casualties! That has been too often ignored. It’s especially egregious right now, in multiple places around the world.
Poppies aren’t in season, and they don’t grow well in greenhouses. That’s why they are connected with May’s Memorial Day. Plus, the “Flanders Field” poem. The silk versions are beautiful, though.

I did not know there was a white poppy to honour civilians. I thought it was only the red poppy for military personnel.

Thank you to all who served. Thinking of my Grandpa and father in law, both who served in WWII.

Yup. Someone at the clinic brought in white ones for us to pair with the red. Nice, loving gesture. I will make sure to have both next year.

In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae 1872 –1918
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
