Not sure what Arlo’s going for. Found an article from five years ago titled “How Charles Schulz Fought for Jesus in A Charlie Brown Christmas” by Michael Foust.

“A Charlie Brown Christmas follows Charlie Brown as he fights the holiday’s commercialism and searches for the true meaning of Christmas. In the show’s final moments, Linus takes center stage at a play practice and recites Luke 2:8-14. ‘And that’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown,’”

But I just don’t see a prediction so it must be something else.

I hope that wreath has turkeys on it. Thanksgiving seems to be forgotten.

I remember reading a Peanuts strip (don’t recall the year) where right after Halloween Lucy has begun to put up Christmas decor and Charlie Brown comments on Christmas coming earlier every year.

Well, I don’t start decorating for Christmas until my birthday and St.Nicholas have passed. Birthday is in two weeks and St.Nicholas leaves on december 6th. So the first decorations go up on december 7th if I am in the mood. Only thing I might do before those two events is hang some lights in de garden and on the carport to brighten the evenings.

I think in A Charlie Brown Christmas Sally says something about not having finished her Halloween candy, and the stores have all geared up for Christmas.

I think he means that the holidays are getting too commercial, and aren’t appreciated for what they represent. Thanksgiving doesn’t tend to move a lot of merch (other than food), whereas Halloween and Christmas have a lot of peripheral spending. Maybe.

If you look a little broadly, with the advent of online tracking cookies, our entire existence has been commercialized. All our information is for sale so that we can be tricked into buying more things.

I’m doing something new this year, which to put up my Christmas tree (artificial) before Thanksgiving. That way I can praise God and give thanks all at once, and longer! I know it’s not traditional, but satisfying for me!

Xmas, stolen from the pagans. THAT is what xmas is all about. "The pagan roots of xmas lie in the tradition of celebrating the winter solstice, which marked the start of a new year and the return of longer and brighter days. While xmas is now associated with the birth of Chuy, its origins are unmistakably pagan. Happy Saturnalia and Yule to all

The over commercialism of Christmas was one of the main themes in A Charlie Brown Christmas. Please watch it for your enjoyment but look for all the times over commercialism is a part.

    Speaking of commercialism…

If anyone reading this is paying for a GoComics Premium membership, does it really get rid of the ads – or at least cut them down so that they’re not actually displaying or playing over each other (sometimes the same ads!!)??

I’m quite cheap but I think I’d be willing to pay $20 for a year without all this distracting, load-delaying garbage!

    Thanks!

More decorations going up this week, including the exterior lights. Still have mostly fall decor inside. Living in Canada, it’s ok to put up Xmas stuff now. We still wait for December 1st to put up the interior Xmas decorations.

Eons ago when I was a child and dinosaurs roamed the earth, there were distinct holiday seasons in many of the places I lived. August and September were back to school/Fall-themed. Halloween began around the second week of October. Thanksgiving took over the week after Halloween. The Friday after Thanksgiving began Christmas, which lasted for about a week after the 25th. Then it was New Year’s until about a week after 1 Jan. At that point all holiday decorations came down and we settled in for the big freeze until St. Valentine’s day.

Now it’s all holidays all year round. Blech.

The one thing I remember WRT A Charlie Brown Christmas were the words of an anonymous network exec at its initial screening: “The Bible thing scares us.”

A neighbor lit her Christmas lights December first, unplugged them January first.

They were permanently nailed up outside her house. She was mad at the painters who painted them all white one year.

My son keeps his up and on all year. I set up solar charged lights and enjoy them year-round for a few hours every night.

Growing up we had one of those aluminum trees with a rotating color wheel spotlight. The limbs were stored in paper rolls so my brother and I pulled out the “swords” and stuck them in the pre-drilled holes in the trunk. Decades later, my wife and I just enjoy the trees at the kiddo’s house. I even tossed our large fake tree since we do very little if any decorating. I think that aluminum tree is still in the attic at my parent’s house along with the metallic loud clanking lawnmowers our grandparents gave us. (Mom & Dad never said anything. They just waited till we were preoccupied with other toys and stuffed them up in the attic. What would those antiques be worth today? Hmmmm)
