I like Mrs. Olsen. She is yanking Caulfield’s chain under the ruse that she is doing him the favor of not having to procrastinate to get an assignment done….with nary even a hint of a smile while doing so.
I’ve always found that the assignments that I did immediately were desultory, but those which had time to simmer in my brain, abetted by deadline-adrenaline, were of higher quality and insight.
When I gave an assignment that was due two weeks out, some of my students would go home and do it that night, then wait to hand it in. Most of them would put it off two weeks and do it the last night before it was due. A small number would not do it at all and would have to do it during recess, after school, or during a game day that they did not get to attend.
