Cheer up, Wanda. They’re perfectly natural.

Secretly put it in video mode and get them to smile before you pretend to take the picture.

This reminds me so much of photos my mom would take of my brother and I. She would tell us to smile and would make a big cheesy smile, then my brother and I would mimic her, and she would get mad. My dad was rather stoic, as I recall.

They have short attention spans, Darryl! You have to catch them off guard!

I guess Santa may have to take back some presents.

Next time don’t do the countdown, just snap the picture.

When I was photographing kids professionally, I’d have them say pizza. After they say it, you have to pause and wait a sec or two for them to close their mouths and then they’ll smile. You have to time it right or start all over.

You snap the photo between saying ‘one’ and ‘two’… The next time before ‘one’…

One millisecond! ONE! KRUTACKIN’! MILLIONTH! OF! A! SECOND!! Is it really that hard to look pleasant for that long?!

Darryls mistake was he counted down rather than take the picture as soon as Wanda had everyone in place. Like a QB that stands in the pocket too long, Darryl got ‘sacked’.

Well Darryl, if you had any sense you would take the picture when you said smile, then count down. The little brats wouldn’t know you got a good picture until you showed them, and by then it would be too late.

Laughing candids are easier. Crying can sometimes be misinterpreted on film as laughter..

This is really a pre-digital camera problem.

Just capture the video of the entire attempt, rewatch it later, and take a screenshot of the one second when everyone looks fine.

You can take more than one shot you know….

Putting red bows in the hair of her two carrot-topped daughters? Wanda’s brain must be in a pre-Christmas dead zone.

That’s how you get the best pictures!!! Save them and then bring them back out when they least expect it a couple of decades later at their weddings.

Next time while talking to kids do not count just take picture.

When my son was that age I used a video camcorder, they can take still photos and I send those to my laptop so I can choose which ones to keep.

That’s why you don’t do a countdown. Just snap the picture as soon as they’re in position.

Show a montage of all the years photos

Or you could take multiple pictures?

….and now you know why digital photography beats chemical.

That’s not going to make christmas email this year.

Wren looks like she is straining, and I think I know why.
